InterContinental global footprint is good news for Cape Town

Cape Town looks set to benefit from InterContinental’s global network of 160 million IHG One Rewards members as the hotel group settles into its new berth at the V&A Waterfront.

Speaking to the Cape Chamber on the sidelines of last week’s official launch of the InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town, Amith Khanna, Head of Franchise (IMEA) at IHG Hotels & Resorts, highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership.

Not only will the Mother City gain direct exposure to IHG’s global guest base through the reflagged hotel—which is operated by Sun International —the presence of such a flagship brand brings substantial training and career development opportunities for the local workforce, Khanna noted.

Furthermore, he views the growing footprint of international luxury hotel groups in Cape Town, including competitors like Marriott, as a clear signal of market maturity and an evolving service offering.

"It's a very small market, but the potential is huge," said Khanna, describing Cape Town as an established, world-class destination. "More competitors will ultimately induce more demand."

The InterContinental Table Bay marks the group's first Cape Town property and its second active InterContinental in South Africa, alongside the InterContinental Johannesburg O.R. Tambo Airport (following the former Sandton location's transition to Southern Sun).

Globally, IHG operates approximately 7,000 hotels across 21 brands in over 100 countries and territories, opening a new hotel somewhere in the world roughly every day.

In Cape Town, IHG believes it has anchored itself in another prime location with strong long-term growth fundamentals.

"I’ve always been fascinated whenever I come to Cape Town, especially when I look at the maturity of the food and beverage scene—it really is among the best in the world," Khanna added, noting that international investors clearly recognise Cape Town's value proposition and robust urban infrastructure.
