Stakeholders Invited to Shape South Africa’s New National Energy Efficiency Strategy

The Department of Energy and Electricity, in partnership with the World Bank Group and EE Business Intelligence, will host a public webinar on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, to launch the formal consultation process for the draft National Energy Efficiency Strategy (NEES) 2026–2035.

Running from 14h00 to 16h30 SAST, the free online session features an opening address by Deputy Minister Alexandra Abrahams alongside global insights from the World Bank’s Joonkyong Seong and technical presentations by strategy authors. Stakeholders will examine quantitative targets, economic sector roadmaps, and governance frameworks designed to succeed the 2005–2015 strategy.

South Africa’s energy landscape remains highly carbon-intensive and structurally constrained, having navigated years of severe electricity shortages, generation shortfalls, and volatile grid reliability. While recent grid stability measures have shown progress, improving energy efficiency remains an urgent, cost-effective mechanism to ease national demand, curb greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance industrial competitiveness.

Electricity supply was ranked the top business environment constraint at precinct level, and third biggest constraint at regional level, in the recent Cape Chamber Business Environment Survey.

Against this backdrop, the Chamber has regularly called for greater public-private partnership in tackling the country's energy challenge. Workshops like the upcoming NEES consultation provide a vital platform for regional businesses to help shape the policies needed to lower utility overheads and secure a competitive economic future.

The workshop provides businesses, financiers, and researchers an interactive platform to engage authors directly and submit recommendations. Registration details and webinar access are available via EE Business Intelligence.
