Cape Chamber welcomes arrest of taxi driver accused of violently attacking a motorist in road rage incident last week
The Cape Chamber welcomes news of the arrest of a 28-year-old taxi driver accused of violently attacking a motorist in an apparent road rage incident last week.
We commend taxi industry stakeholders for swiftly helping to identify the suspect, who now faces an attempted murder charge. The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) says the incident highlights the need for urgent measures to improve industry accountability amid a push for widespread taxi operator compliance.
The Cape Chamber, through our Taxi Cluster partnership with SANTACO Western Cape, continues to push for much-needed industry reforms aimed at promoting both passenger safety and taxi sector sustainability. Isolated violence incidents should not deflect attention from the significant progress already achieved in stabilising this vital public transport sector.
We believe a compliant and economically sustainable taxi industry is a key ingredient for regional economic growth. An ongoing concerted effort from both the private and public sectors will help stamp out taxi violence wherever it occurs.
Rogue drivers must face the full might of the law.
